Additions to the Christmas List   2 comments

The pastor’s e-mail this week:

Dear Church Family:

I’m sure that most of you are scrambling to complete all of your Christmas tasks. As you work through the list of gifts to give this season, let me suggest a couple of things you might add.

Why not give the gift of mercy?! The dictionary defines mercy as…”compassion or forbearance shown especially to an offender or to one subject to one’s power…also lenient or compassionate treatment in general.” God knew that we would be so in need of His mercy that He not only extended it to us once for all on the cross, but He also gives us a “fresh dose” of His mercy every day. Who do you know that could use a gift of mercy this Christmas? Don’t wait for them to ask for it. Just give it.

Why not give the gift of affirmation?! Let me provide an example. One of our small groups put together a statement of affirmation for one of their members recently. What an incredible statement of a life well-lived….and he’s still living it!

A Tribute To A Man of God:

This is a man who is gentle and kind, yet bold in sharing his faith.
Failing in eyesight, yet having great insight into God’s Word.
He’s much older in age, yet so young at heart.
A child of God who enjoys God’s unlimited resources.
Patient in time of trouble as he rejoices in the Lord.
When persecuted he continues to trust in the Lord.
Instead of judging others, he accepts and forgives.
Instead of worrying, he turns it over to the Lord in prayer.
This is a man, who enjoys life but says, “The best is yet to come.”
This is a man who radiates God’s love and is loved by God.

For many people in our lives, affirmation is the best gift you could give this year.  I love this quote by Martin Luther. It fits the “spirit” of our discussion this week.

~”I have held many things in my hands, and have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.”~
