O For a Faith That Will Not Shrink

William Hiley Bathurst
1796-1877

O, for a faith that will not shrink,
Though pressed by every foe,
That will not tremble on the brink
Of any earthly woe!

That will not murmur nor complain
Beneath the chastening rod,
But, in the hour of grief or pain,
Will lean upon its God.

A faith that shines more bright and clear
When tempests rage without;
That when in danger knows no fear,
In darkness feels no doubt.

That bears, unmoved, the world’s dread frown
Nor heeds its scornful smile;
That seas of trouble cannot drown,
Nor Satan’s arts beguile.

A faith that keeps the narrow way
Till life’s last hour is fled,
And with a pure and heavenly ray
Lights up a dying bed.

Lord, give me such a faith as this,
And then, whate’er may come,
I’ll taste, e’en here, the hallowed bliss
Of an eternal home.

  6. During my devotionals I read hymns. This morning I read “O,For A Faith That Will Not Shrink” My heart and soul connected to the words and I prayed the words as my prayer to Jesus. I looked on the Internet to find more about, William H. Bathurst. I found the site called,”Cyberhymnal”
    I could read and hear alot of other hymns there by him. From there I found other sites about him and some how landed here. Well, I looked to find the above song, and what did I find? Beautiful violets, my birth month flower!(Februry). How great is His Love.

  7. Sharon, I am so glad you “happened” by here! Blessings on you and may you feel His love today and always!

  8. I went to church this morning and was really uplifted by this hymn – the first time that I heard it and it has also become my prayer. I was trying to find out more about the hymn and also landed here! May His name be praised
