Sunday Hymn – Beyond the Sunset   10 comments

Virgil P. Brock told how he wrote this favorite hymn about heaven:

This song was born during a conversation at the dinner table, one evening in 1936, after watching a very unusual sunset at Winona Lake, Indiana, with my blind cousin Horace Burr and his wife, Grace.  My blind cousin excitedly remarked that he had never seen a more beautiful sunset.

“People are always amazed when you talk about seeing,” I told him. “I can see,” Horace replied. “I see through other people’s eyes, and I think I often see more;  I see beyond the sunset.”

The phrase “beyond the sunset” and the striking inflection of his voice struck me so forcibly, I began singing the first few measures.  “That’s beautiful!” his wife interrupted. “Please go to the piano and sing it.”

We went to the piano nearby and completed the first verse.  Before the evening meal was finished, all four stanzas had been written and we sang the entire song together.

Beyond the Sunset

Beyond the sunset, O blissful morning, when with our Saviour heav’n is begun.
Earth’s toiling ended, O glorious dawning; beyond the sunset when day is done.

Beyond the sunset, no clouds will gather; no storms will threaten, no fears annoy;
O day of gladness, O day unending, beyond the sunset, eternal joy!

Beyond the sunset, a hand will guide me to God the Father, whom I adore;
His glorious presence, His words of welcome,will be my portion on that fair shore.

Beyond the sunset, O glad reunion with our dear loved ones who’ve gone before.
In that fair homeland we’ll know no parting-beyond the sunset for evermore!

  3. I have heard this most beautiful hymn sung ending with home sweet home, home sweet home, from where I’ll never roam, I see the light of that City so bright ,my home sweet home. I have been searching for it for some time. I always thought I would like it sung at my funeral. If you have or could find this music for me I would much appreciate it . will look forward to hearing from you. thanks, Millie Dean

    I too love “My Home, Sweet Home” hymn. The sheet music I have indicates it was written by N.B. Vandall. Copyright was in 1926 by Lisslenas Publishing Company. I love the three verses.

    Walking along life’sroad on day, I heard a voice so sweetly say,
    “A place up in heaven I am building thee. A beautiful, beautoful home.

    Loved ones upon that shore I’ll meet, casting their crowns at Jesus’ feet.
    I’ll worship and praise Him forever more. In my beautiful, beautiful home.

    3 Life’s day is short, I soon shall go, to be with Him who loved me so.
    I see in the distance that shinning shore, my beautiful, beautiful home.

    Home, sweet home, home sweet home, where I’ll never roam.
    I see the light of that city so bright, my home, sweet, home.

    Write me and I’ll email you a copy of the music.

    • I have been looking to the sheet music for this song for a long time. If it’s still available I’d love to get a copy. Thanks Tom Dahlen

    • I have been looking for this song for quite a few years, I thought it had a different title. Is there a place I can hear it to see if it is the right one? or sheet music I can look at

  6. I would appreciate having a copy. I bought an album of our pastor’s wife and this song years ago (1964 or 65). The tune occassionally pops up in my mind.

    When I sub to teach our Boble class, quiet often I read words from songs to the group to educate them on 2 ideas = other types of christian song and their ‘message’

    Thank you very much.
