Please Mr. Postman

The Carpenters’ version:

Please Mister Postman, look and see
If there’s a letter in your bag for me
(Please, Please Mister Postman)
Why’s it takin’ such a long time
For me to hear from that boy of mine

There must be some word today
From my boyfriend so far away
Please Mister Postman, look and see
If there’s a letter, a letter for me

I’ve been standin’ here waitin’ Mister Postman
So patiently
For just a card, or just a letter
Sayin’ he’s returnin’ home to me
Mister Postman, look and see
If there’s a letter in your bag for me
Why’s it takin’ such a long time
For me to hear from that boy of mine

So many days you passed me by
See the tears standin’ in my eyes
You didn’t stop to make me feel better
By leavin’ me a card or a letter

Mister Postman, look and see
If there’s a letter in your bag for me
Why’s it takin’ such a long time

I think I know why…

Time Magazine said in 1974: “On March 2, 1974 the cost of mailing
a first-class letter will go up from 8¢ to a dime.”

And today:

  1. So wait, do I need to go buy new stamps? They are 41cents starting May 13th? Boy, what rock have I been under?

  2. Oh boy. I am not to happy…

  3. I was in the post office last week with a stack of letters needing to be mailed. I asked…of course…for the still good 39 cent stamps, and the (not so very nice) post lady informed me I would have to purchase the 41 cent as they were out of the 39 cent. A good four days before the rate increase, mind you. I was incredulous. I said, “well isn’t that convenient.” She made no comment. “Surely you see the humor, don’t you?” I asked. Evidently she didn’t…

  4. Lisa, that is unbelievable. And she didn’t even suggest the Forever Stamp? Puhlease! Not nice. Shame on her!
