Tamar and the Matroyshka Doll   9 comments

This has been a very interesting study for me.  I have been intrigued by the different insights into the life of this woman and trying to glean all that I can from her story.  What I have learned not only from this story but regarding the Bible as a whole is that the Bible is like a never ending matryoshka doll.

You have the outside doll who represents the Bible as a whole.  As you continue to study and dig deeper into this book, each new doll represents what you learn. You think you have reached the final answer and the next doll opens up and there is more truth to discover!

So, with that in mind, here are my not so final thoughts on Tammy –

Tammy got a raw deal!  Her father-in-law reneged on his contract.  All she wanted was to be married and have children. Now she is a childless widow, which spells social disaster.  That’s what a marriage contract back then was all about.  Husband = Children = Heirs and so on and so on.  There were LAWS back then to make sure this little cycle continued.  Bottom line, Judah had to make sure Tammy was taken care of in this regard.  It was just as important to Judah as it was to Tamar.  Tamar realized the importance more than Judah did because Judah was too busy singing his new favorite song – “I was sinking deep in sin. Weeeeeee!”
